ROORoof Replacement Brisbane

Colorbond roofing chosen for the house, the pitch and the bay

Colorbond is pre-painted steel and the most common new roof on Brisbane houses. Getting the profile, colour and grade right for the house matters more than the brand name.

Colorbond roofing in Brisbane

Colorbond is a pre-painted steel roofing product made in a wide range of colours and profiles. Roof Replacement Brisbane arranges Colorbond roofing for new roofs, extensions and re-roofs through independent local contractors across Greater Brisbane. The contractor inspects, recommends a profile and grade for your site, and gives you an itemised written quote.

Why it is so common here

Brisbane's mix of heavy summer rain, hail, heat and humidity favours a roof that sheds water quickly, is light on the frame and can be fixed down firmly against storm gusts. Pre-painted steel fits that brief. It also suits the variety of Brisbane houses: corrugated sheet looks right on a Queenslander, while ribbed profiles suit flat-roofed extensions and modern homes.

Profile choices

  • Corrugated. The classic rounded wave. Suits traditional homes, verandahs and character streets.
  • Ribbed or trapezoidal. Taller ribs carry more water and suit lower pitches and longer runs.
  • Concealed-fix. Clips hold the sheets with no screws through the top, giving a clean look on architectural roofs.

The minimum pitch and maximum sheet length differ for each profile, so the contractor should confirm the profile suits your roof before quoting.

Colour and heat

Colour affects how much heat a roof absorbs. Pale colours reflect more of it, so the roof space and ceiling run cooler on summer afternoons. Darker colours look sharp on contemporary homes but absorb more heat. Whatever the colour, an insulated blanket under the sheets does a lot of the work, and roof ventilation helps the rest. Our guide to energy-efficient roof replacement options covers the full picture.

Near the bay

Salt air shortens the life of the wrong steel. Manufacturers publish guidance based on how far a site is from breaking surf or calm salt water. Homes near the bay and the river mouth should ask:

  1. Which grade or product is being quoted, and does it suit the distance from salt water?
  2. Are the screws, flashings and gutters compatible with that product?
  3. What maintenance does the manufacturer recommend for the environment?

What a good Colorbond job includes

A neat roof starts underneath. Battens are checked and fixed to suit the wind classification, the blanket is laid tight without sagging, and sheets are set out square so the ribs line up along the ridge. Flashings are formed from matching material. Swarf, the small filings left by cutting and drilling, should be swept off the same day, because it rusts and stains the paint.

For a full re-roof, see re-roofing; if the existing roof is iron, see metal roof replacement.

Who does the work

This is a referral service. We ask the contractors we work with to hold the licences and insurance the job needs. In Queensland the QBCC licenses roofing contractors; ask to see a licence before work starts.

Q&A

Straight answers to common questions

Which Colorbond colour is coolest in Brisbane?

Lighter colours reflect more of the sun's heat, so pale greys and off-whites keep a roof space cooler than dark charcoals. The manufacturer publishes solar absorptance figures for each colour, and your contractor can show you where your choice sits. Glare toward neighbours is worth considering too.

Can Colorbond go on a low-pitched roof?

Yes. Many steel profiles are made for low pitches, including skillion and near-flat roofs, provided the pitch meets the manufacturer's minimum for that profile and sheet length. Corrugated sheeting generally needs more pitch than deep ribbed profiles.

Is Colorbond suitable for bayside suburbs?

Standard products are designed for most of Brisbane, but sites close to salt water may need a more corrosion-resistant grade under the manufacturer's environment guidance. Ask what grade is being quoted and whether the fixings and flashings match it.

Does a Colorbond roof need maintenance?

Not much, but some. Areas the rain does not wash, such as under eaves overhangs and around the gutters, benefit from an occasional rinse, and leaves should not be left sitting in valleys and gutters. Keep incompatible metals and run-off away from the steel.

Can I change my roof colour if I live in a character area?

Sometimes. Brisbane City Council's character overlays focus on how a house looks from the street, so colour and profile changes on older homes may need checking. A certifier or the council can tell you what applies before you order the steel.
